Local blogger and New Orleans Times-Picayune columnist Robert Mann on Friday flagged an open letter from the St. Tammany Republican Parish Executive Committee to Lt. Gov. Jay Dardenne (R), who endorsed state Rep. John Bel Edwards (D) in a Thursday news conference. Dardenne also ran for governor but did not make it to the Nov. 21 runoff election.
In the letter, which was posted to the committee's Facebook page, chairman Peter Egan likened Dardenne's endorsement of Edwards to a jilted husband taking violent revenge on his ex-wife. Vitter is the ex-wife in this analogy.
"Your behavior somewhat parallels what might be in the mind frame and actions of an angry and rageful husband," Egan wrote in the letter dated Thursday. "The behavior of endorsing Edwards is akin to that of a jilted man firing indiscriminately at his ex-wife’s car, mindless of the collateral harm and injury to many innocent people. Unlike the jilted man who cannot take back his impulsive actions, you, however, can redress the damage you may be causing.”
Egan went on to call on Dardenne to retract his endorsement of Edwards or else cut ties with the Republican Party.
