A federal district court on Thursday upheld a Connecticut gun control law that expanded the state's assault weapons ban, created a dangerous weapon offender registry and formed new rules for buying ammunition, the Hartford Courant reported.

"The court concludes that the legislation is constitutional," Judge Alfred Covello wrote in the decision. "While the act burdens the plaintiffs' Second Amendment rights, it is substantially related to the important governmental interest of public safety and crime control."

Former House Speaker Dennis Hastert (R-IL) on Wednesday said that his Republican colleagues should pass an immigration bill that would give undocumented immigrants legal status in the United States.

An employee from a window shield company sent an email to Connecticut education officials using a picture of shattered glass in Sandy Hook Elementary School after the 2012 shooting to promote its product, the Hartford Courant reported Thursday.

The email from Commercial Window Shield titled "Conn. Educators, towns move to secure school building glass," stated that "securing glass with shatter resistant window film will help keep out unwanted intruders." The film holds glass in place when it breaks.

Rep. Louie Gohmert (R-TX) said he wore a tie with a Santa Claus pattern to the State of the Union address on Tuesday because President Obama would be acting like the fictional character in his speech.

"Well I thought, I can't wear that. That's Santa Claus," Gohmert told conservative radio host Sean Hannity, his guest at the speech, describing the process of choosing a tie for the speech. "And then I realized, we're going to be listening to Santa Claus tonight promising whatever anybody wants they can have."
