When asked if it was a mistake to leave slavery out of Virginia's proclamation, Barbour responded "well, I don't think so."
"It is not significant," Barbour said of the controversy that surrounded McDonnell. "It's trying to make a big deal out of something that doesn't amount to diddly."
Barbour also suggested that McDonnell's Virginia proclamation wasn't exactly an outlier. People who thought the proclamation was offensive "should talk to my Democratic legislature, which has done exactly the same thing in Mississippi for years," Barbour said.
