Romney ultimately crossed Christie off his short list because of Christie's fundraising restrictions as a sitting governor and because Christie did not provide enough information to the Romney camp during the vetting process.

According to a memo obtained by the authors, Christie did not provide documentation on his medical history and other items like paperwork about a defamation lawsuit.

Beth Myers, who managed Romney's vice president search, issued a statement to the Times at the request of Christie's office on Thursday.

"Governor Christie complied fully with the Romney campaign’s request for documents in a timely manner, including a complete medical report from his internist and cardiologist," the statement said.
