“It’s much better for the voters in Wyoming to have a broad selection,” Cheney told the newspaper in an interview.

Cheney said that she decided to announce her candidacy in Gillette because it has been one of the areas most effected by the White House's energy policy.

"There is no question Wyoming has been harder hit than any other state over the past eight years,” she told the paper as she promised to make the state's coal industry one of the centerpieces of her campaign.

Cheney challenged Sen. Mike Enzi (R-WY) for his Senate seat in 2014, but dropped out, citing "serious health issues" in her family. Her aborted run had bitterly divided some of the Republican Party establishment in Wyoming.
