"Fifteen years ago I failed my family, but found forgiveness and love," Vitter said in the 30-second spot. "I learned that our falls aren't what define us, but rather how we get up, accept responsibility and earn redemption."

Vitter's Democratic opponent, state Rep. John Bel Edwards, released an ad last week that slammed the senator for prioritizing "prostitutes over patriots." The ad claimed that Vitter took a call from a prostitute "minutes after he skipped a vote honoring 28 soldiers who gave their lives in defense of our freedom."

The senator copped to a "very serious sin" in 2007, after his phone number appeared on the client list of the so-called "D.C. Madam."

The details of the Vitter campaign's ad buy were unclear. The runoff election is Nov. 21.
