Gregory, who was ousted from his perch as host of "Meet The Press" last fall amid poor ratings, said in an interview with New York Magazine's Gabriel Sherman published Wednesday that he didn't like to see Williams judged for telling a bogus story about taking fire aboard a helicopter in Iraq in 2003.
"I have a lot of respect for Brian. I’ve been around him a long time," Gregory told Sherman. "I never did anything wrong, and I faced a lot of scrutiny. No one questioned my journalistic capability or my integrity. But I don’t like to see him judged just by this."
Still, Gregory added that Williams was "wrong" to embellish the tale.
"How does it make you feel now that his suspension is winding down?" Sherman asked Gregory. "He has a job and you don’t."
"It’s just not something that I think about," Gregory responded.
