“For the mainstream media to go out and say that this didn’t happen is just factually inaccurate,” Trump campaign manager Corey Lewandowski said in an interview with Breitbart News. “We know it happened.”
Lewandowski pointed to FBI records and “local media accounts” to back up Trump's story. Yet as TPM reported, there is no video footage of Americans celebrating the attacks, and none of the unconfirmed reports of such incidents come close to the scale Trump described. Rumors about people celebrating at “rooftop parties,” as reported in the Washington Post and Associated Press at the time, were never proven true.
Top New Jersey officials, including Gov. Chris Christie (R) and Jersey City Mayor Steve Fulop (D), have denied Trump’s version of events. Fact checkers and pundits from both sides of the aisle—including a writer for Breitbart—have also pushed back against these baseless claims.
But according to Lewandowski, those denials are just proof that the media is biased against his candidate.
“The media has their own agenda,” he said. “They want to try and discredit as many people as possible so that they can have an establishment candidate come in and think that everything is going to be the same because they are all controlled by the special interests and they are all controlled by the media and that is what the American people are just so tired of.”
