"The candidates last night spent a lot of time talking about what the government can do for you," Carson spokeswoman Ying Ma told MSNBC’s Jose Diaz-Balart.

“They promised a lot of goodies, everything from debt-free college to in-state tuition for illegal immigrants. And they made it explicitly clear that they want the rich to pay for all of these things.”

Carson himself has repeatedly expressed concern over America’s “unsustainable” debt on the campaign trail, blaming it primarily on social safety net programs.

Ma sounded a similar note on MSNBC, insisting the nation's $18.5 trillion national debt “is the result of politicians in Washington promising things they can’t afford, spending money on all kinds of things we don’t have money for.”

Carson's wasn’t the only Republican campaign going after Democrats for promising to expand education and healthcare programs.

Appearing on “Fox & Friends” on Wednesday morning, Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL) said that Tuesday evening was a “liberal versus liberal debate about who was going to give away the most free stuff.”
