The Furies Unleashed

The Gist: Trump rallies have emerged now as a stage where supporters feel empowered to take in-the-moment action against the "the other" that Trump so fervently rails against from the stump. While the huge events have often attracted chaotic crowds, the events have taken a turn for the dangerous.

From The Reporter's Notebook

The violence that erupted at Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump's rally in Chicago had some of his rivals seemingly reluctant during their Sunday morning news interviews to keep their vows to support the GOP nominee -- even if it is the real estate mogul, reported TPM's Sara Jerde. Marco Rubio gave the most emotional response, saying Saturday that it was getting harder "every day" to support Trump.

Agree or Disagree?

Josh Marshall: "What we have seen over the last two weeks isn't just an escalation of chaos and low level violence but a progressive normalization of unacceptable behavior - more racist verbal attacks, more violence. This is in turn clearly attracting more people who want trouble - on both sides. If you're an angry racist who wants to act out on his anger, can you imagine any better place to go than a Trump rally? If you hate Trump, his supporters and all he stands for and want to get physical about it, where best to go? Again, this is not meant to equate the two sides. As I mentioned yesterday, Trump has repeatedly claimed that instances of crowd violence at his rallies occurred when protestors - "bad dudes" - attacked his supporters and his supporters fought back. Until the events last night in Chicago, there is no evidence that anything like this ever happened. Not once. It is all lies."

BUZZING: Today in the Hive

From a TPM Prime member: "So many of the important decisions being made by our government officials and elected representatives appear well-targeted to meet the desires of the most wealthy in our society. It is very easy for me to believe that the network of friendship created through transactions like these, in addition to direct political donations, is an important factor. And it's easy to say "work on campaign finance reform", but part of creating a movement for that reform involves agreeing that we have a problem to begin with. And much of this sort of behavior will probably never be reachable by legal prohibition...we will only stop it by publicly objecting and, when things get bad enough, being willing to withhold votes and support."
